Description (Service) | Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE), Partial Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (pFAS), Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorders (ARND), Static Encephalopathy Alcohol Exposed (SEAE) and Alcohol Related Birth Defects (ARBD) are all names for a spectrum of disorders caused when a pregnant woman consumes alcohol. Prenatal exposure to alcohol can cause more than 428 different medical conditions and affects more than 1000 gene and cell processes. About 37% of babies have been exposed to binge drinking (5+ drinks per occasion) multiple times. In most cases the exposure occurs before the mother knows she is pregnant. Damage caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol is permanent. However, early diagnosis and intensive intervention can make an enormous different in the future of the child. There is no known safe level of prenatal alcohol exposure. FASlink's website contains a wealth of information. The FASlink Discussion Forum provides 24/7 information and support online. |
